What Is a Leeb Hardness Tester and How Does It Work?
A practical guide to portable metal hardness testing, from impact and rebound to hardness measurement.
WHAT IS A LEEB HARDNESS TESTER?
A Leeb hardness tester is a portable instrument used to measure the hardness of metallic components.
Unlike conventional bench-top hardness testers, it can be brought directly to the component, making it particularly useful for large, heavy, assembled, or difficult-to-move parts.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
01 — Impact
The impact body is accelerated toward the test surface.
↓
02 — Contact
The impact body contacts the metal surface and transfers energy to the material.
↓
03 — Rebound
The impact body rebounds after the impact.
↓
04 — Measurement
The instrument measures the velocity response and calculates the Leeb hardness value.
FROM IMPACT TO HARDNESS VALUE
During a Leeb hardness test, the instrument evaluates the relationship between the impact velocity and rebound velocity of the impact body.
The measured response reflects how the material reacts to the controlled impact.
The instrument then processes the measurement and displays the corresponding Leeb hardness value (HL).
Impact Velocity → Rebound Response → HL
The harder the material, the different the rebound response under the same test conditions.
THE TESTING PROCESS
A Simple Testing Process
01 — Prepare
Clean the test surface and remove loose scale, dirt, oil or other contaminants.
02 — Position
Place the impact device correctly against the test surface.
03 — Impact
Release the impact body and perform the measurement.
04 — Read
The instrument calculates and displays the hardness result.
WHAT CAN IT MEASURE?
Typical Materials & Components
Steel
Plates, structures and machine components
Castings
Large cast metal components
Forgings
Forged shafts and industrial parts
Gears
Mechanical transmission components
Pressure Equipment
Industrial vessels and equipment
Pipelines
Metal pipes and field inspection points
WHY USE LEEB HARDNESS TESTING?
01
Portable
Take the hardness tester directly to the inspection site.
02
Fast
Perform rapid measurements across multiple inspection points.
03
Large Components
Suitable for many large or heavy components that are difficult to move.
04
Multiple Scales
Depending on the instrument and applicable conversion relationships, results can be evaluated in different hardness scales.
WHAT AFFECTS MEASUREMENT?
Reliable Results Start with Proper Testing Conditions
Make 5 small cards:
Surface Condition
The test surface should be sufficiently clean and suitable for measurement.
Component Stability
The component should remain stable during testing.
Thickness & Mass
Thin or flexible components may require additional support.
Test Direction
Follow the specified testing direction and correction requirements.
Material Setting
Select the appropriate material and hardness conversion relationship.
Portable Leeb Testing vs. Conventional Testing
| Leeb Hardness Testing | Conventional Bench Testing |
Equipment | Portable | Usually stationary |
Large Components | Suitable for many applications | Often difficult |
On-Site Testing | Convenient | Less convenient |
Measurement | Fast | Generally slower |
Field Maintenance | Well suited | More difficult |
Application | Industrial & field inspection | Laboratory / controlled testing |
Leeb hardness testing does not replace every conventional hardness method. It provides a practical alternative when portability and on-site inspection are important.
HOW TO CHOOSE A LEEB HARDNESS TESTER
Before Choosing a Portable Hardness Tester
Consider:
01 — Material
What metals will you inspect?
02 — Component
Are the components large, heavy, curved or difficult to access?
03 — Impact Device
Which impact device is appropriate for your application?
04 — Hardness Scale
Do you need HL, HRC, HB, HV or another applicable scale?
05 — Data Management
Do you need measurement storage and inspection records?
